Despite the fact that most universities tell faculty to "publish or perish", the research culture in many Indian Universities is still poor. Universities in the country have retained strong teaching functions and weak research functions. Universities in the developed world have a firm tradition of research and have consistently evidenced research productivity. The work of the faculty in Universities has traditionally been trifocal, consisting of teaching, research and community service/ extension. University faculty members are required to become teachers, researchers and service-oriented professionals. The goals and mission of the University influence the level of concentration on each task to be given by faculty members. At M.M.University, Mullana, we expect that a faculty member is an efficient teacher, productive researcher and active university citizen. To increase the research productivity among faculty members, certain factors help in producing high performing research environment. These are coordination, research emphasis, positive group climate, decentralized organization, participative governance, human resources, appropriate rewards, management support, budget, collaboration with other institutions etc. Development of a research culture can not take place overnight. It entails careful planning and constant process of development. Universities in the country have to transform into research-intensive institutions of higher learning.
With the aim of developing the research culture in our University, the management has decided to publish Journal of Engineering and Technology. This being the first issue of the Journal. University is already publishing "Contemporary Clinical Dentistry" and "M M University Journal of Management Practices". Our strategy is to eliminate the common idea that research is only an 'additional' rather than an integral function of a University. We believe in not just "publish or perish", but "patent, publish and prosper" environment in the University.
